I dont want to learn how to read guitar tabs, I want to learn how to read notes. I have played violin for 8 years and I know how to read notes, so will that help me learn faster guitar notes? I just need to know I guess the basics of the guitar, to see if I really like it or note. Thanks in advance.

Its good you are learning any guitar. Its first important to learn your chords, you will still need them when you rock. Learn your basic open chord patterns, then learn your bar chord forms. Then learn your scales starting with the major scale, pentatonic scale, blues scale, harmonic minor and diminished. learn them in the modes of boxed off sections of 5 fret distances to latter be able to join the boxes to see its complete form over the entire neck. practise mechanically every day. after the scales you will see how chord forms fit into these scales visually. and help you stay in key when jamming with others. after all this learn two note leads of thirds and their inversions sixths. all except pentatonic,blues and diminished use them. these use a combination of thirds and fourths. this opens up another area of your music of harmony. if you play any of the basic triads(chords based on the first, third and fifth) and you add thirds or sixths out of that scale on any note of that scale. with exception of the pentatonic,blues and diminished which has the consequetive thirds fourth ect. you will have more complex added chord forms than the basic triads-major, minor ,diminished and augumented. which will create movement and a modern feel to your music. heres two theories i apply which i have discovered.( to any basic chord you can add any third or sixth out of that scale. – or thirds and/or fourths for the others). (to any bass note you can add any seventh chord as long as you use any three notes of the four notes that make up that seventh chord.
this is where iam today and i rock! learn these things in this order till you understand everything iam stating here.- oh and you might want to include finger picking which makes playing on your own exciting. and with practising on your own with scales record strumming of the different chords in that scale. so you learn to identify how the scales fit with these chords. happy jamming!
